Mat Hughes. Photographic Artist

Framed & Ready to Hang
Biography
Mat Hughes b.1964
I was born in Libya, when the country had a King, and was raised in the UK. I was given a blue plastic camera when I was little, so naturally went on to study photography. After three years at the Plymouth College of Art & Design, I hit the streets of London in 1984 as a freelance photographic assistant.
I moved to Melbourne in 2009 with my Australian born wife. In 2012, with the birth of our daughter, I became a full time stay at home Dad. Between juggling the demands of a busy home life I’ve had the opportunity to continue and pursue my photographic craft.
I’m drawn to journeys. I like the idea of moving through a landscape towards an unknown distant horizon. I love wide open spaces and their simplicity in shape and form. Little nuances in a landscape interest me. Geography and history play their part too, but I like to stand still and imagine the passing of time over the land.
With 35 years’ experience, my craft naturally bridges traditional wet-process and alternative techniques as well as digital photography. Final presentation and framing are integral elements to my work and are carefully considered.
I regularly exhibit in both Melbourne and as part of the wider community of alternative photographers in various online publications internationally.
